Description
The remarkable and enchanting orange flower of the claret cup (Echinocereus triglochidiatus) cactus with a new bud alongside. Claret cups are in the hedgehog cactus family Echinocereus, the name of which is derived from the Greek word "echinos", meaning "hedgehog" combined with the Latin "cereus", or candle. The second name, or "specific epithet" in botanical terms comes from tri- and glochidium, with a meaning of "having three arrow points".
Claret cup cactus is widespread across the American southwest deserts from southern Colorado (where it is the State Cactus) and New Mexico through Arizona and down into northwestern Mexico. The flower are variable, from this brilliant orange to red, and are about three inches in diameter. They are among the first cactus to bloom in early spring and remain open at night, also. This specimen was photographed in the Tucson Mountains, west of Tucson, Arizona on April 7th, 2023.
